The read aloud feature of Amazon.com s newer Kindles has generated a fair amount of controversy over copyright issues. Now the New York Times reports that the robotic voice of Kindle mispronounces a fairly important name: Barack Obama. That could be a problem for the new large screen Kindle DX, which Amazon is targeting at newspaper readers. Amazon is reportedly fixing the problem. Will Amazon ever open a Kindle App Store in the style of Apple, opening the platform to third-party developers? Don't hold your breath, says Silicon Alley Insider. The blog spoke to a product manager at the Kindle DX launch this week, who indicated an app store is not a priority. Ian Freed, the Amazon exec in charge of Kindle, expressed a similar view in an interview with TechFlash last November. Bsquare Corp. reported a two percent drop in revenue and a net loss of $90,000 for the first quarter, with CEO Brian Crowley saying that he was pleased that the Bellevue provider of mobile software solutions generated cash and increased service and software revenue on a sequential basis. Bellevue's nGenera Customer Interaction Management, the company formerly known as Talisma, has named Nikhil Govindaraj to the position of vice president of products. Amazon has a new distribution channel for its MP3 digital music business. The online retailer is working with ABC's new "Music Lounge," which streams and sells songs from the network's popular TV shows like "Grey's Anatomy" and "Gossip Girl." Amazon will handle sales of music tracks. Bellevue medical device incubator Aspen Medtech -- which had raised $1 million in funding from Three Arch Partners and Prospect Venture Partners -- has shut down, according to a report from the Venture Capital Dispatch Blog. The firm was led by Seattle Medical Technologies executives Daniel Hawkins, John Adams and Clif Alferness. Adams and Alferness -- well known Seattle area medical device entrepreneurs -- also were involved in the medical device incubator Scout Medical Technologies. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer spoke in Silicon Valley about entrepreneurship and venture capital today. Here's some of what he said: "The opportunity and need to invent ... remains strong. There's going to be less venture capital this year than last year. There's still probably in my opinion more venture capital than there are really good ideas to absorb the venture capital," said Ballmer, according to a report from the Stanford News Service. Targeted Genetics reported only $3.9 million in cash on the books at the close of the first quarter, with the Seattle biotech company saying that it would consider shutting down or filing for bankruptcy at the end of June if it couldn t raise more money. Despite posting a first quarter loss of $12 million, shares of RealNetworks surged nearly 10 percent today. It was also disclosed that Real has spent $6 million in legal fees battling the movie studios over its RealDVD copying software. So why the stock jump?

VentureBeat s Matt Marshall looks into the controversial post transaction marketing techniques of two Seattle area companies WhitePages and Intelius and concludes that quot Intelius is certainly no worse than WhitePages. quot The analysis follows Seattle Weekly's scathing profile of Intelius, which noted hundreds of consumer complaints and pointed to some of founder Naveen Jain's past legal troubles. Post updated with comments from WhitePages founder Alex Algard.

A Financial Times story today raised new concerns about the potential for Microsoft s Windows 7 Release Candidate to give Internet Explorer 8 an unfair advantage over Firefox, Opera and other rival browsers, because of Microsoft's recommended installation instructions for the preliminary version of the operating system. But as I looked into the situation today, executives with Opera Software and Firefox maker Mozilla downplayed that particular issue and said they remain more concerned about Microsoft s distribution of Internet Explorer through the automatic updating mechanism in existing Windows versions.

In management circles, the conventional wisdom on layoffs is to cut once and cut deep enough to weather a downturn and keep surviving employees from getting the jitters. Microsoft went against that philosophy in January when it announced plans to eliminate up to 5,000 positions worldwide starting with 1,400 but stretching the rest out over 18 months. This morning, the company accelerated its plans when it made additional layoffs that bring the total close to 5,000 much sooner than expected. But Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's memo to employees won t exactly instill a sense of calm in the people who remain.

Bill Gates and Warren Buffett appeared together for an extended interview on Fox Business News this morning, and TechCrunch has a transcript from their exchange about Google -- which started when host Liz Claman quoted Buffett saying Google s quot moat of competitiveness quot is so wide and full of sharks and crocodiles that it s tough to compete against them. Gates responded, “Well, technology companies do for a period get in these wonderful positions and, you know, it’s great that there’s somebody willing to attack those moats. Microsoft is undeterred. We look at each one of those crocodiles and we say charge!” John R. Wilke, a Wall Street Journal reporter who covered Microsoft's U.S. antitrust case, died of cancer Friday afternoon, according to the newspaper. He was 54. With all the buzz around Amazon s big press conference in New York Wednesday where the company is expected to unveil a new larger-screen Kindle I
found it intriguing that Twitter co founder Biz Stone has just arrived in New York, with his own personal Kindle in tow. When I asked him if he's taking part in the Amazon event, however, Stone wrote back via e-mail, "No, I'm here for other business." Dang, so much for our big scoop on a Kindle-Twitter linkup. Well, maybe we shouldn't give up on it just yet.

Maybe it s the economy, or restlessness, or some combination of the two, but there has been a ton of turnover among technology journalists and bloggers lately. The latest word is that Owen Thomas, the gossip monger behind Gawker s Valleywag, is leaving the site to join NBC. He ll be replaced by Gawker night editor Ryan Tate. Appropriately, that news comes via MG Siegler, who recently left VentureBeat to join TechCrunch. Thursday, Joe Wilcox announced his departure from Microsoft Watch, which he took over in 2006 following Mary Jo Foley s departure. He doesn t go into detail but writes that he's joining "the swelling ranks of journalists smitten by the economic crisis and by changes the Internet is forcing on my profession." I'll miss Joe's reporting on the site, and it will be interesting to see what eWeek does with it. Another recently departed Microsoft beat reporter is Ben Romano, who left the Seattle Times to become U.S. correspondent for Recharge, a trade journal covering renewable energy. He has been replaced by Sharon Chan, a veteran of the Seattle newspaper. Ben's departure came shortly after Joe Tartakoff left the Seattle P-I's Microsoft beat as part of newspaper s closure. Joe is still covering Microsoft, and other topics, on the digital media beat at PaidContent.org. Reporter Andrea James is now covering Microsoft, and other business and technology subjects, for the surviving SeattlePI.com. As a footnote, the changes aren't just happening among technology reporters. On the public-relations side, AdAge.com reports that Microsoft this week switched its Windows Mobile account from Weber Shandwick to Waggener Edstrom, the agency that handles much of the Redmond company s PR business, including the Windows account. Seattle-based marketing and communications firm Wexley School for Girls will also work on the account. The change comes as Microsoft gears up for the release of Windows Mobile 6.5, trying to mount a stronger challenge to the iPhone and other rivals in the market for mobile phones and software.
