The football team has hired Kevin Farr as its new defensive backs coach, the Athletics Department announced yesterday. Farr comes to Tufts following a nine-season stint as the defensive coordinator at Saint Lawrence University, where he helped lead the Saints to the Liberty League championship and a first-place conference ranking in four defensive categories, including total defense.

The Sioux Falls Pheasants announced Friday that they have strengthened their starting rotation with the signing of American Association all-star Chris Salberg and Florida Marlins draft pick Brad Stone.Salberg returns to Sioux Falls after a stellar 2010 season in which he finished second in the league with an 11-1 record and a 3.26 ERA. The South Beloit, Ill., native fanned 81 batters in 127 innings. The 26-year-old lefty is a 2006 draft pick of the Baltimore Orioles and spent the first three years of his pro career playing in the Orioles' system.Stone is a 2006 draft pick of the Marlins and spent the past five seasons playing affiliate ball for Florida. The St. Louis, Mo., native spent time last year with Double-A Jacksonville and Triple-A New Orleans. He appeared in 11 games with Jacksonville, going 3-3 with a 3.95 ERA in 41 innings before being promoted to Triple-A, where he went 3-1 with a 4.29 ERA in 35.2 innings. The 26-year-old right-hander holds a career ERA of 3.00 in 170 minor league games.

Greg Garmon was in the seventh grade when he learned he might never play football again. Ironic, considering today the 18-year-old junior at McDowell Senior High School is one of the most sought-after football recruits in the country and one of the most recruited players in Erie County history.

But that future wasn't evident when Garmon was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma -- a cancer of the immune system -- while he was a student at St. George School.
Lymphoma is the third most common cancer in children and adolescents, according to the Lymphoma Research Foundation; Garmon was one of about 1,500 children diagnosed with the disease annually. It started in his hip, then moved into his stomach and chest, requiring significant treatment.
